The Commonwealth of the Philippines was the administrative body that governed the Philippines from 1935 to 1946 and was formed to overlook a ten-year period of peaceful transition to full independence. The Philippines was once part of the Spanish Empire for over 300 years before being ceded to the United States due to the latter's victory in the Spanish-American War which led to the Treaty of Paris (1898).
